POSHAN MAAH PRESS RELEASE
Chandigarh.1 October,2020:Mal-Nutrition is a major challenge facing India today. POSHAN Abhiyaan "India’s flagship programme" was launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister on the occasion of the International Women’s Day on 8th of March, 2018 from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan with an aim to improve Nutritional Outcomes for Children, Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers and aims to address it in a mission-mode.
Jan Andolan and community mobilization are essential components for effective implementation of POSHAN Abhiyaan. In Pursuance of this objective, every year, Rashtriya POSHAN Maah is celebrated in convergence with all stake holders during the month of September since 2018.
In U.T., Chandigarh, Rashtriya POSHAN Maah 2020 was celebrated with full enthusiasm and energy in convergence with line departments. In initial phase of POSHAN Maah, Worthy Adviser to the Administrator U.T., Chandigarh along with Secretary Social Welfare and Director Social Welfare launched Aahar Sahita – Moral Code of Nutrition, Takeaways Booklet and CBE Posters for successful inauguration of POSHAN Maah, 2020.
Due to COVID 19 situation Rashtriya POSHAN Maah 2020 is repositioned from conventional to digital mode of Jan Andolan leveraging the power of extensive use of virtual meetings, Social Media, Mass Media, Outdoor Media, Print Media etc.
During Rashtriya POSHAN Maah 2020, the main focus is on the two major activities to be carried out at grass root level namely:-
Identification and tracking of children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM)
Plantation drives for promotion of Kitchen gardens at Anganwadi Centres and community levels.
Adhering to the COVID-19 precautions, during POSHAN Maah, Webinars, Live Sessions, Online Lectures, Online Awareness Generation Programme, Inter Personal Online Sessions, Online Demonstration, Virtual Community Base Events, Online Talks, distribution of Herbal Plants i.e. Tulsi, Giloye, Ajwayan, Pathar Chatt, Ashok at the doorsteps of the beneficiaries by the Anganwadi Workers were conducted by the Department. 33 Kitchen Gardens have also been established in various AWCs for promoting the values of nutritional Food among the general public. Total 49,337 number of activities on different topics of POSHAN were conducted during this one month period with participation of 3,46,385 number of beneficiaries.
At the closing ceremony of Rashtriya POSHAN Maah, 2020 under POSHAN Abhiyaan Shri Manoj Kumar Parida, IAS Adviser to the Administrator U.T, Chandigarh along with Shri. Yashpal Garg, IAS, Secretary Social Welfare U.T, Chandigarh, Smt, Navjot Kaur, PCS, Director Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development , Chandigarh and Shri. Rajiv Tiwari, Director Public Relation, Chandigarh launched the "AMRIT Campaign - Acute Malnutrition Removal Through Integrated Technique " for management and monitoring of Severely Acute Malnourished Children (SAM). This campaign will help in Early Identification and tracking of Severe Acute Malnourished (SAM) Children, Early initiation of treatment and minimizing the risk of complications in later stage. The campaign is based on the 3 intervention strategies for the management and monitoring of SAM/MAM Children of the Anganwadi Centers i.e.
Nutrition therapy (RUTF) plus standard nutrition and monitoring Standard Nutrition therapy.
Standard Nutrition therapy plus Intensive nutrition counseling and handholding of the family.
Bio fortified wheat products (NABI) plus standard nutrition.
In addition to this, Nutritious Recipe Booklet -"POSHAN Sutra-Aahar Pustika" was also launched. This book contains Health and Nutritional Education along with 50 Nutritious recipes.
The Department in convergence with all line departments celebrated Rashtriya POSHAN Maah with splendid strategy to achieve the target of POSHAN Abhiyaan and make it a huge success, both at grass root level and through online mode. The Ministry of Women and Child Development, Govt. of India in its closing ceremony event held on 30th September, 2020 under the Chairpersonship of Hon'ble Ms. Smriti Irani, Union Minister of Women & Child Development, Govt. of India appreciated the outstanding performance of UT Chandigarh during POSHAN Maah, 2020.
